The Enceladus room enjoys a wonderful view of Mount Etna. Legend has it that the volcanic activity of Etna is given by the fiery breaths of the giant trapped in the depths of Sicily.
Myth of Enceladus
Enceladus, one of the giant sons of Gea and Uranus, was born in Thrace, a region of northeastern Greece.
He took part in the Gigantomachy, the battle between the Giants and the Olympians: with the help of his brothers, he devised a plan to attack Olympus and challenge the power of Zeus. The Giant intended to build a tower of mountains to reach the top of the sacred mountain. To help him ascend to heaven, the tops of the highest mountains were placed one on top of the other.
After the enormous effort, the Giants had almost reached the summit. Jupiter then - seeing them so close to his throne - furious with rage, hurled a bolt of lightning at them which inflamed the sky, struck them and blinded them, throwing them back to the ground. Enceladus and his brothers ended up dying on the ground. But Zeus - not happy - cast another thunderbolt against the tower of mountains, which crushed the Giants by collapsing.
The boulders of Mount Etna fell on Enceladus, who was buried by them. Unable to free himself from that massive mass of stone, blinded by frustration, the Giant began to squirm, spitting fire and flames from his jaws.
These came out of the stone columns, causing a very violent rumble. The lava, melted by the breath of the Giant, began to descend the slopes of the mountain. From everywhere we heard shouts «Etna smokes!!», while in the meantime the lava destroyed everything it encountered along its descent from the mountain.
Only when the giant subsided did the violent eruption finally stop.
Even today, from time to time his anger reawakens, making the volcano of Catania tremble and burn. Here, then, explained the reasons for the first eruption of Etna.
